After Gary Glassman and I
finished our project of interviewing prisoners in San Quentin Prison and
Chino Prison, I found myself back in my studio again, and this time,
rather than focusing on the "dark side" of others (in prison), I began to focus
the darker side within myself. In both the "Prisoners" videotape project
(see
Individual Works #1 - "Prisoners") and the "Jonnie Hitler" project, the question for me was the same: Why
do some people hurt other people? As part of the "Jonnie Hitler"
project, I took
some of
my existing music, both singing and instrumentals, and
began to re-record it backwards. I became fascinated by the fact that my
own music, when played backwards, sounded very Middle-Eastern or even African to me.
The Jonnie Hitler CD
contains the best of this backwards music from that period. (PS, that's
my cat Tuffy on the cover of the CD, and in one of the Jonnie Hitler
videos which accompanies the music, "All In The Memory", Tuffy eats a
chipmunk in slow motion.)
